  • Telco opening up its network to enable rainfall monitoring solution, underpinned by technology from Wireless DNA that analyses electromagnetic waves to measure atmospheric humidity and precipitation levels.
  • Vantage, Vodafone involved in pilot of technology across four Spanish autonomous communities.
  • Negotiations underway to deploy solution in some of Vantage’s markets this year.

Vodafone and Vantage Towers are collaborating with Spanish network monitoring and optimisation specialist Wireless DNA on a rainfall measurement solution. Wireless DNA said it is currently in negotiations with Vantage Towers to deploy the service in some of the TowerCo’s markets this year.

The meteorological technology analyses network data and the behaviour of wireless signals — which are sensitive to atmospheric conditions and can be disrupted by precipitation — and takes into account the many factors that influence signal quality to measure rainfall across a vast area. Wireless DNA highlighted that it has been developing the rainfall measurement solution for the past six years. The service is expected to be used to better project extreme weather instances and help prevent floods, wildfires, and other natural disasters.
