Asia Climate Week to debate the biggest challenges from extreme global weather
26-29 March 2019 Suntec Singapore
Next week’s Asia Climate Week brings together the who’s who of the world climate industry, amongst growing concern about the effects of extreme weather, climate change and rapid urbanisation.
The event is made up of three dimensions: the sixth InterMET Asia, the most important industry event for the region, InterFLOOD Asia which examines the management and mitigation of flooding and the debut InterAIR Asia which highlights the growing, deadly effect of air pollution.
Together, these events form a world class conference, international exhibition and series of free workshops from 26-29 March at Suntec Singapore.
The Grand Concluding Debate
On 28 March the main conference will finish with the Grand Concluding Debate, when a panel will debate the question ‘What is the biggest challenge facing the Global Weather Enterprise in the next 5 years?’
The Global Weather Enterprise (GWE) is the name coined for the organisations and individuals in the commercial, public and academic sectors who contribute to scientific research, technology, observations, modelling, forecasting, and forecast products and services associated with weather & climate change. The debate about how to mitigate, manage and give early warning of the impacts of extreme weather and climate change in the face of huge challenges is increasingly vociferous. This will make the debate at the end of Asia Climate Week especially compelling and crucial.
This year takes the debate one step further ...
Since its launch in 2014, InterMET Asia has helped facilitate this debate by bringing the GWE together to talk candidly, without the pre-set, formal agendas that characterise most other meetings.
Prior to the conference, the organisers have asked a group of experts for initial thoughts. The challenges they have come up with include:
The session will be chaired by Peter Lennox, CEO of the New Zealand MetService, with two teams debating what they think will be the single biggest challenge over the next 5 years. A spokesperson for each team will have 10 minutes to move what they consider to be the biggest challenge. The debate will then be picked up by the audience and a vote taken to determine what the majority consider to be the overall biggest challenge.

Issued: 15 October 2018
SE Asia and Africa’s leading shows for meteorology technology and addressing the impact of extreme weather & flooding set to grow again in 2019.
Key theme of InterMET Asia and InterFLOOD conferences & exhibitions for 2019 is big challenge of rapid urbanisation and the growth of mega-cities
The 6th InterMET Asia and the 2nd InterFLOOD Asia will once again be co-located in Singapore (from 27-28 March 2019) and aiming to build further on the successful 2018 events.
These are the largest exhibitions & conferences for South East Asia and Africa dedicated to innovations in meteorology technology and forecasting services across the public and private sectors, and to the use of meteorology, hydrology and engineering to manage, mitigate and build resilience to the impact of extreme weather & climate change-related events.
New records and more exhibitors
The 5th InterMET Asia in April 2018 set new records, with some 70 exhibiting organisations, 82 expert speakers and 633 registered attendees. There was also increased support from the World Bank and the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction & Recovery (GFDRR), and from the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and the Association of the Hydro-Meteorological Equipment Industry (HMEI), together with the Singapore National Environment Agency and Meteorological Services Singapore, plus other influential organisations.
A key feature of 2018 was the successful launch alongside InterMET of the flood management, mitigation and resilience event, InterFLOOD Asia.
The debut InterFLOOD exhibition & conference attracted many favourable comments and the 2nd edition will again be supported by the UK Flood Partnership, which will be backing a pavilion to showcase the experienced UK flood management and mitigation industry. A Singapore pavilion will showcase the increasing local interest in the event.
Tony Stephenson, the event director of InterMET and InterFLOOD Asia said: “Since the 5th InterMET and launch InterFLOOD, the number of enquiries from new exhibitors in the meteorology and flood areas has been highly encouraging and we anticipate further significant growth in 2019.”
Sponsored receptions
As in 2018 there will again be two sponsored receptions – the Welcome Reception, to be sponsored by the World Bank-GFDRR on the eve of the main conference & exhibition opening, and the Official Reception at the end of Day 1 of the main conference and exhibition, again to be sponsored by Earth Networks.
Theme for 2019 – Growing challenge of rapid urbanisation and rise of megacities – and increasing weather extremes
For 2019 the central theme of the InterMET and InterFLOOD conferences will be what many consider to be the most significant challenge in S E Asia and Africa – rapid urbanisation and rise of larger cities and megacities.
The challenge is huge. Over 4 billion people – 55% of the world’s population – now live in cities and the largest 20 by population are in Asia and Africa. Their ‘footprints’ cover agriculture, energy, water supply, transportation, health services and other ‘critical’ infrastructure systems vital to their survival. All of these not only depend on accurate weather forecasting services, they are also increasingly vulnerable to the impact of extreme weather & climate change.
For 2019, the InterMET conference will focus on two areas – the implications of rapid urbanisation for the routine use of hydrometeorological technology and services; and the urgent need to develop accurate extreme weather impact early warning services to protect life and critical services. The InterFLOOD conference will focus on innovations in mitigating, managing and building resilience to the impact of flood events on life and infrastructure.
The conferences will, on the one hand, examine how providers of technology products and services are rising to the challenges of rapid urbanisation and, on the other, what the implications are for weather and flood affected enterprises and essential services.
There will also be ‘technical sessions’ devoted to the latest innovations in meteorology products and services, and to flood control technologies.
New – Closing conference debate: Is there a future for national weather services?
Is there a future for national weather services? Are they wasting their money buying ‘stuff’, or is there a better way to meet customer needs?
A new feature of the conference will be a concluding plenary ‘debate’ where the question will be posed – should national weather services focus less on buying ‘stuff’ (i.e. hardware such as powerful computers) and more on buying in ‘forecasting and warning services’ from commercial providers?
This is an increasingly hot issue and has wide ranging implications for all those ‘stakeholders’ in weather forecasting services – from the governments and international agencies which currently finance them, to the many weather affected businesses and suppliers of essential services in the public and private sectors which rely on them to operate.
World Bank-GFDRR-WMO
The 2019 conference will also feature the latest round in the Special Sessions on Public-Private-Academic engagement held in conjunction with the World Bank, GFDRR and WMO. These bring together commercial, public and research organisations with the international agencies and donors forming the ‘Global Weather Enterprise’ to discuss how best to collaborate to advance the application of hydromet technology and services, both routinely and to address the impact of extreme weather across the public and private sectors.
These discussions have played a key role in the launch of the Global Weather Enterprise Forum – a platform to facilitate co-operation, engagement and liaison between the public, private and academic sectors in the global weather enterprise for the benefit of all.
Call for Papers
Experts in meteorology, hydrology and flood mitigation and management, as well as members of weather affected public and private enterprises are invited to submit an outline for a 15 minute conference presentation for the InterMET or InterFLOOD conference streams. In the first instance you should contact the Conference Director, Ian Harper. Details at www.intermet.asia
Mr Stephenson said: “Rapid urbanisation is a major issue for the regions covered by InterMET and InterFLOOD and the conferences offer an ideal opportunity for experts in meteorology, hydrology and flood control to meet and share the latest knowledge and best practice when it comes to technology innovation and in addressing the growing impact of extreme weather-related events on critical services.”
